Physiotherapists study the science of movement. They evaluate patient's symptoms, movements and risk factors to determine the source of symptoms and most appropriate care.

Physiotherapy can help if you have an injury, or chronic pain that affects your daily function.  It is also recommended after surgery such as a hip replacement, or an event such as a heart attack or stroke.

Physiotherapists focus on both prevention and rehabilitation. Treatment can be for problems caused by injury, disease or disability. Some examples include:

  • Mechanical neck and back pain
  • Injury to upper and lower limbs, such as sprains and strains related to work or leisure activities
  • Pain in your joints, muscles and ligaments, such as arthritis and the after-effects of surgery
  • Cardiorespiratory rehabilitation, related to conditions such as asthma, or events such as a heart attack
  • Pelvic issues, such as bladder and bowel control related to childbirth
  • Loss of mobility due to neurological conditions or injury, such as Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis or spinal cord injury
  • Fatigue, pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of muscle strength, for example during cancer treatment, or palliative care

Your session will be unique, because it is all about you and your particular needs. First the physiotherapist will perform an interview to collect your medical history, then they perform an assessment to determine what treatment would be most suitable.  Treatment may include:

  • Manual therapy, such as mobilizations
  • Modalities, such as electrotherapy or ultrasound
  • Exercise instruction and supervision
  • Bracing or taping
  • Recommendations for work and home to help you improve faster and prevent re-injury
